Pebbles are painted by children

You may have noticed that the area at the front of West Wight Sports Centre is looking much tidier and brighter recently. This is because we have been working with various sections of the community to improve the approach to the Centre.

We received a grant from the National Lottery Awards For All to do the work and to involve as many sections of the community as possible.

The pebble bed which was originally painted by local school children in 2003, but had since faded has been spectacularly re-painted by children (and one or two adults!). Groups from All Saints, Saint Saviours and West Wight Middle schools painted their designs during the school day and the remaining pebbles were painted by children using the Sports Centre during the school holidays. These sessions were lead by volunteers from West Wight churches and the Green Gym.

The 'garden' area between the path and car park has been fenced off and there will be teams from West Wight Youth Club and the Green Gym filling the area with plants before the end of April. Although the fence seems rather extreme, it was decided that the plants needed complete protection from those of us who take short cuts from the car park! It is hoped that when the plants are established that the fence will either be removed or lowered.

The final part of the project will be a poster competition open to children aged under 16 who are invited to design a poster promoting the protection of our local environment. Closing dates for entries is 30th April and they should be handed in to West Wight Sports Centre.
